Will Lankshear is on the verge of leaving Tottenham Hotspur permanently for Middlesbrough.

Many expected Roberto De Zerbi to hand the young striker a chance in pre-season, but he's already leaving Hotspur Way.

On his way north, Lankshear will complete his medical before joining the Championship promotion hopefuls.

After differing loan spells at West Brom and Oxford United, now he gets the chance to call somewhere home.

Lankshear never really made it at Tottenham, with his red card at Galatasaray one of his most memorable moments.

But, after the fee for Boro to sign him was revealed, Tottenham and De Zerbi may be left in disbelief.

Tottenham News has covered the quickly developing sale of Lankshear to Middlesbrough this week.

Now, Keith Downie has reported that the total deal to sign him could earn Spurs up to a gobsmacking £20million.

The Sky Sports journalist states that the move will cost half of that upfront immediately.

With the other £10m only in potential add-ons, it may not reach that, but Spurs will have only accepted if they were achievable.

The biggest of those will likely be if Lankshear fires Boro back to the Premier League.

This is huge money for a striker, who has never really proven himself fully.

Relegated to League One while on loan with Oxford, Lankshear will argue that it was his teammates around him that did the damage.

To be fair, he would have a point.

Lankshear managed 11 goals and four assists as the Kassam Stadium, so did prove that he could score consistently, especially in a better side like Middlesbrough.

But, he did struggle at West Brom before that, where expectations were much higher at The Hawthorns.

The 21-year-old played 11 games in the 2024/25 season for the Baggies, failing to be involved in a single goal there.

To bank up to £20m for a player who isn't fully proven and has only scored once in six senior Spurs appearances in unbelievable.

De Zerbi and Tottenham are laughing all the way to the bank, and if sales like this continue, they may spend even bigger than they already have.
