What we know as Tottenham now in advanced talks over Will Lankshear sale

Tottenham Hotspur look set to sell Will Lankshear in the near future.

The 21-year-old was signed to Tottenham's academy from Sheffield United back in August 2022.

Spurs agreed a reported £2million deal with the Blades at the time, with around half of that fee said to be guaranteed and the rest performance-related bonuses.

He made his first-team breakthrough in the 2024-25 campaign, making six appearances in total before having an unsuccessful loan spell at West Brom.

However, he impressed at Oxford United last season, scoring 12 goals and making 16 goal contributions in total from 47 appearances in all competitions despite The U's being relegated from the Championship.

Now, though, it looks like the young striker is going to continue his career away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Who is Will Lankshear leaving Tottenham for?

Earlier this month, Tottenham News covered how Lankshear and Mikey Moore had been spotted training together ahead of Tottenham's pre-season.

It hinted at the fact that Lankshear may be given the chance to stake a claim in Roberto De Zerbi's first team for the 2026/27 campaign.

However, Football London journalist Alasdair Gold has provided a new update that suggests his time in North London is coming to an end.

Gold posted on X to share that he understands Championship outfit Middlesbrough are in advanced talks to sign Lankshear.

In a further post, he said that Lankshear had interest from elsewhere other than Middlesbrough.

The sticking point appeared to be the price tag, but Boro are seemingly close to meeting Spurs' valuation for Lankshear.

Spurs must not regret Will Lankshear sale

Gold wrote last week that Sporting CP, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Southampton all had approaches turned down for Lankshear.

If Boro are close to reaching Spurs' valuation, then you can only assume Tottenham think this is a good deal for the club.

But, they have to make sure there are no regrets with the sale of a talented forward who still has plenty of time to develop.

They only need look at the success Harry Kane has gone on to have to see that patience can indeed be a virtue.

If they do want to sell, though, then surely it has to be for a sizeable fee, and surely it has to include some sort of future incentive such as a sell-on clause.

Potentially, they should also be looking to have some sort of buy-back agreement, or matching agreement if Boro look to sell in the future.

Hopefully, it is not a decision that winds up being premature and comes back to bite Spurs, because there were high hopes that Lankshear would become an important player for the club.
