Tottenham backed to reach Sandro Tonali compromise with third Newcastle bid, 'Should be enough'

Tottenham could land Sandro Tonali for a lower fee than the £100million Newcastle United are holding out for.

That is according to Tottenham expert John Wenham, who was reacting to news of Spurs having multiple approaches rejected for the midfielder.

Tottenham recently made a £75m bid for the Italy international, which was swiftly knocked back by Newcastle.

In a bizarre twist, it was reported on Thursday that Tottenham made a second approach for Tonali, but did not improve their initial offer.

The Magpies unsurprisingly also knocked this back, but there is hope Tottenham are not finished there.

And while a fee of £100m has been quoted for Tonali, it may well be that a compromise can be reached, with Spurs already putting their money where their mouth is this summer.

Tottenham have already proved they can walk the walk over transfers

Spurs became infamous under the Daniel Levy regime for not signing players - or signing the wrong ones when cash was freed up.

The same was true in the winter window when a lack of movement also proved disastrous.

After avoiding Premier League relegation by the skin of their teeth, however, Spurs now mean business.

Full-backs Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have both arrived on free contracts after departing Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

Martin Dubravka has also joined after the expiration of his Burnley deal, but more impressive than all that is the £52m spent to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Wenham pointed to that as he exclusively told Tottenham News of Spurs' Tonali pursuit: “£100m is an incredibly high amount of money, but what I am pleased to see is that Tottenham are getting their business done early and not baulking at clubs putting high valuations.

"If they're saying they want a player, they're going out and doing it. We've seen that already with paying £52m for Van Hecke. I think Tottenham will pay the price Newcastle ask for Tonali.

"But I don't think it will be £100m. I think around £85m should be enough, which is still a lot of money, but if you've made clear that Roberto De Zerbi wants the player, and on that basis, based on what I've seen with Van Hecke, I believe the board will go out and sign the player. I think he will be a Tottenham player."

Beyond the transfer fee, there is also the small matter of Tonali's wages that must be factored in.

How much are Tottenham willing to pay Tonali per week?

A separate report from Sky Sports News on Thursday evening suggested Tottenham are willing to match Tonali's wage demands.

Spurs will hand the 26-year-old - hailed as "exceptional" by Italian pundit Mina Rzouki regarding his tactical understanding - £275,000 a week.

That is a staggering amount of money, particularly when you factor in the fee Spurs will have to pay Newcastle.

But if this really is a new era, then these are the types of deals that will truly get Tottenham back to where they belong.
