Simon Jordan gets it embarrassingly wrong over Tottenham and Jan Paul van Hecke saga
Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete a deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
After securing the signatures of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, Roberto De Zerbi is about to land his third signing of the term.
The Italian would guide the Lilywhites to safety at the back end of last season, rescuing the club after the dismal spells of Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.
Since then, the reset has well and truly begun, with the £52million deal for Van Hecke showing serious signs of intent.
Naturally, you can't please everyone, with Simon Jordan criticising the move.
However, the TalkSPORT pundit has got this one wrong, with the Dutchman almost the perfect signing for De Zerbi.
Simon Jordan drops controversial verdict on Tottenham transfer
Joining Brighton in 2020, centre-back Van Hecke has continued to shift through the gears.
After multiple loan spells, he would begin to become a key player under De Zerbi in the 2023-24 season, before further improving under Fabian Hurzeler.
Giving his thoughts on the deal, TalkSPORT pundit Jordan remained critical.
"Wow," he said sarcastically, when the Dutchman was mentioned."
"If you are going to take on a top six side, in order to be better than the six you are trying to emulate, you better spend bigger, better and buy better players than them.
"Wow, you're buying a Brighton player. I know Chelsea have made a staple diet out of it, but don't expect me to go 'that's impressive'," he added.
Alongside Senesi, Van Hecke arrives amid a big reshuffle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - further strengthening the side, with Micky van de Ven also set to stay this summer.
Simon Jordan has got it wrong with Van Hecke verdict - how important could he be under De Zerbi?
Always outspoken, Jordan was naturally unafraid to give his opinion on Van Hecke.
With this one though, his verdict does seem unreasonably negative.
Of course, the defender is coming from Brighton, but the comments surrounding beating the 'top six' do not make sense in regard to this.
These players do not simply come out of thin air, nor do they grow on trees.
Where did Virgil van Dijk come from? Where did, Toby Alderweireld, Gareth Bale and more all come from?
For a player to become one of the division's elite, they must come from somewhere.
Of course, there is no guarantee that Van Hecke ever reaches a similar level, but to write off a player as a result of the club he is joining from is simply unfair to both the Dutchman himself, and the work put in by Spurs.
Having developed into a key player under De Zerbi, he is the perfect match for his system.
Fantastic with the ball at his feet, Van Hecke is more than comfortable in build up, while he has built up a more than solid cv of defensive work in a Brighton side always there or thereabouts in the race for Europe.
With the Lilywhites looking to reset, their new defender could well be the most important signing of the summer, hence the willingness to part with such a fee.
