Djed Spence in line for summer rollercoaster as Tottenham rumours emerge
Djed Spence could be on his way out of Tottenham Hotspur this summer, despite having been a regular last season.
Last term's misery was certainly influential when it came to rating a player's ability, but, for Spence, he did more good than bad.
The 25-year-old made 30 league appearances for the Lilywhites, including 23 starts, albeit without a goal or assist to show for it.
Nonetheless, he played an influential role, with his versatility by far his biggest asset.
Many expected that versatility would be vital under Roberto De Zerbi again next season.
However, it remains to be seen if that will be the case.
Could Djed Spence leave Tottenham this summer?
It would be a shock to see Spurs part ways with Spence given their role that he played last season, but it would not be beyond the realms of possibility.
There have been unverified reports across social media that the wing-back is not in De Zerbi's plans for the upcoming campaign, despite having featured regularly for him since his arrival in North London.
Everton are one of the clubs named with an interest in Spence, which makes plenty of sense given reports that have stated they will be in the market for a new right-back this summer.
What is to blame for Spence's potential exit?
Spence is arguably the most versatile player in the Tottenham squad, alongside Archie Gray.
He, too, faces somewhat of an uncertain future, given the lack of involvement he has had since the arrival of De Zerbi.
He can feature on either side of the defence, while also being able to play slightly higher if required, just as he did on several occasions last season.
However, without European football to attend to, the need for depth has been reduced, which may be partly to blame for his seemingly pending exit.
His departure would leave Tottenham with Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie and Souza for the full-back department.
And given the injury history of Udogie in particular, Spurs may still need to look to bring another full-back in in the event of Spence's move away from North London.
