Djed Spence: Tottenham set for 7-figure financial blow as World Cup set to trigger clause
Djed Spence will reportedly trigger a financial clause in his Tottenham Hotspur contract if he plays a single minute of this summer's World Cup.
The 25-year-old was one of a few surprise inclusions by Thomas Tuchel for his 26-man England squad crossing the pond in search of World Cup glory.
An up and down 2025-26 campaign saw the versatile right-back play 44 times for Spurs across all competitions, with 30 of those coming in the Premier League.
However, that number of appearances was his second-most in a single season during his career so far, showing just how important he was for the Lilywhites last term.
So, whilst everyone connected with Tottenham will be wishing him well over the coming weeks, he's almost certain to set Spurs back financially as a result of his England call-up.
Djed Spence's England World Cup clause explained
Signing for Tottenham in the summer of 2022, Spence moved to N17 from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £20million.
Boro included a number of clauses in that deal in order to ensure they could benefit financially in the future, and they have been doing exactly that, as some of these clauses have already been met.
| Spence's 25-26 PL stats | Result |
| Minutes played | 2,056 |
| Pass accuracy | 80.8% |
| Duels won | 121 |
| Recoveries | 111 |
| Average match rating | 6.6 |
Spence is expected to play for England at the World Cup, with Tuchel likely to deploy his speed and duel-winning ability at some point in the tournament.
Middlesbrough will certainly be hoping that's the case, as they aren't done with the clauses they included in their agreement with Spurs just yet.
As per a report from TeessideLive, one of the host of clauses included in the deal involved him making a certain amount of competitive England appearances, of which he's currently made just the one.
The report claims that should Spence play for just a single minute in any of the Three Lions' matches, Tottenham will owe Middlesbrough a fee that is said to be worth more than £1m.
Has Spence been worth the money for Tottenham?
As aforementioned, Spence's move to Tottenham was worth up to £20m, which isn't an amount of money to be snuffed at.
He's been a frustrating player at times during his stay in North London so far, and he ended the 2025-26 campaign starting just twice under Roberto De Zerbi.
That being said though, at 25-years old he's still only just entering the prime years of his career, and he does have the feel of a player that is so close to taking his game to a truly elite level.
On top of this, his versatile nature means he's an extremely valuable player to have in the team, and the fact he's English too always helps with Premier League registration rules.
All things considered then, whilst Spurs may have hoped for slightly more out of Spence four years after he arrived, if Tottenham were to sell him this summer, they'd be sure to fetch over £20m for him.
