Cody Gakpo: What Jurgen Klopp once said about Tottenham-linked star after Liverpool exit update
Cody Gakpo has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, and he may be the perfect addition if Jurgen Klopp is anything to go by.
Spurs are set for a summer of transition, and having already concluded a deal for Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke, they have made a good start.
Deals for Sandro Tonali and Gakpo are also said to be in the pipeline, with the former having been the subject of a rejected £80million bid from the North Londoners.
Whether they do may hinge on their own transfer business, amid links to RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande.
With that said, if the Merseysiders were to sanction an exit for Gakpo, and Spurs were to win the race, Klopp's previous comments provide an excellent insight into what to expect.
What did Jurgen Klopp say about Cody Gakpo?
The duo spent a season and a half together at Liverpool, and in that time frame, Gakpo managed 23 goals and eight assists.
Klopp was clearly a fan of the Netherlands international, though that was clear from the day he arrived at Anfield, as per his first interview.
Back in 2023, Klopp said via the Liverpool website: "He's a really, really, really good player. The position he played most often is obviously the left wing, that's clear.
"But he can play different positions. He played for Holland different positions, he played for Eindhoven in different positions, so that's all fine. He can play all four positions up front, whatever you play."
And for Tottenham, that level of versatility will be key next season, given the struggles they have faced in the attacking third.
Only Richarlison was able to be relied on in front of goal, and depending on his future, having two players who can interchange in games as much as they would be able to would be an excellent option to have for Roberto De Zerbi.
How much would Tottenham need to finalize Gakpo deal?
The 27-year-old is under contract at Anfield until 2030, meaning that the Reds are not desperate for a summer sale.
With that said, they may may be open to it if the price is right, and for Tottenham, that price may well be in the region of £70million.
Ben Jacobs reported via X earlier in June that Liverpool had noted the £70m fee that was required for Barcelona to sign Anthony Gordon, suggesting that they expect a similar return for Gakpo.
Given the money at stake, and the fact that Gakpo has yet to actually express a desire to leave Liverpool, it could be a transfer that rumbles on throughout the summer window.
