Tottenham fans to pay the price as new Championship reveal shows Lewis family incompetence
Tottenham Hotspur‘s current predicament means the Lewis family might be the most unpopular owners in the Premier League right now.
Joe Lewis has been under pressure to sell Tottenham, with fans furious at how the club has been run as they edge towards Premier League relegation.
Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor have come and gone, leaving the squad in a worse place than when they arrived, but the blame doesn’t solely rest on them.
The recruitment over the last two years has been simply abysmal, with Ange Postecoglou the last manager to feel as if he wasn’t backed by the board.
Tottenham’s poor transfer strategy has come under scathing criticism, and given their spending over the last year, the possibility of seeing them in the Championship next season seems unthinkable.

Tottenham have spent nearly as much as the entire Championship since summer 2025
When looking at the recruitment in the winter transfer window, it’s safe to say that Frank needed a lot more, with Conor Gallagher’s arrival from Atletico Madrid being the only significant piece of business.
Having sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace, who was last season’s top scorer in all competitions, Tottenham certainly didn’t have a successful window as they failed to replace him.
However, despite not finding an adequate replacement, Spurs have still spent an extortionate amount of money over the last 12 months.

Since the start of the 2025 summer transfer window, Tottenham have spent £218.2million on players, which is shocking, as they sit 17th in the table and just one point clear of the relegation zone.
By contrast, all 24 Championship teams have spent a combined total of £220.7m.
It’s staggering that Tottenham find themselves in this position, and while Roberto De Zerbi has a huge task on his hands, the Lewis family are the real culprits.

The fact that Spurs could be competing with teams that are so financially inferior to them next season is gross negligence from everyone behind the scenes.
How has Tottenham’s recruitment policy gone so wrong?
Unfortunately for the fans, they’re the ones who have to suffer in this scenario, which is the least they deserve.
In February, technical director Johan Lange confirmed that Spurs were saving their money for the summer, which is completely ridiculous.
Under Postecoglou, they signed three teenagers and Dominic Solanke, which resulted in them finishing 17th but winning the Europa League.

Frank came through the door and spent big on the likes of Xavi Simons and Mohamed Kudus, although both players haven’t adapted too well to life in N17.
Signing players who have the potential to grow into superstars isn’t a strong method for a club like Spurs, which should have incredibly high ambitions.
The Lewis family are now paying the price for their poor decisions, and should Tottenham drop down to the Championship, it would be an embarrassment of riches.
