Luka Vuskovic: Tottenham contract decision to come after World Cup as Hamburg stance emerges

Luka Vuskovic will reportedly make a decision on whether to sign a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur until after this summer’s World Cup.

The 19-year-old is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in European football at the moment, and looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.

Having joined Tottenham last summer from Croatian giants Hajduk Split, Vuskovic enjoyed a brilliant 2025-26 season out on loan with German Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.

Six goals in 30 total appearances, with 27 of his 28 Bundesliga outings being as part of the starting XI, the teenager established himself as one of the top centre-backs in that division last term.

Now preparing for a World Cup campaign with Croatia, Vuskovic’s future as a Tottenham player has been the topic of major discussion heading into the summer transfer window.

Hamburg want Luka Vuskovic back as Spurs contract call delayed

Contracted with Tottenham until 2030, Spurs do have time on their side in order to ink Vuskovic to a new deal.

However, with his stock and value rising rapidly, the Croatian is likely to want fresh terms in order to better reflect the trajectory he’s on.

Tottenham were reportedly planning to loan Vuskovic back to Hamburg for the 2026-27 season, but not before he and the Lilywhites agreed to a new long-term contract to keep him in N17.

However, a fresh report from The Athletic now claims that the defender will hold off on any negotiations over a new Spurs deal, as well as making any concrete decision on his future, until after his World Cup has ended with Croatia.

It’s also claimed that Hamburg would absolutely be keen to have him back for another term, but the German side reportedly don’t currently see that as being a likely possibility.

Vuskovic decision could shape Tottenham’s summer window

This is a talent that Tottenham can’t afford to let slip through their fingers.

At 19, he’s just banked a season that saw him named to the Bundesliga Team of the Season, and with some top European sides reportedly circling, he clearly has the ability and potential to become one of the top centre-backs in world football.

With the likes of Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies looking likely to leave Tottenham this summer, Roberto De Zerbi‘s centre-back department may be in desperate need of new faces.

Extending Vuskovic and bringing him into the first-team fold would be like a new signing for Spurs in that regard, and would take so much pressure off sourcing new recruits in this position.

Vuskovic has shown with his Hamburg form that he doesn’t need another loan move away from Tottenham; he’s ready to be a Spurs starter right now.
