Roberto De Zerbi 'inquest' justified as 'crazy' Tottenham sack increasingly likely

Roberto De Zerbi is understandably receiving external pressure after a nightmare start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lilywhites are winless in the Premier League after five matches, with only two points and as many goals to their name.

There is a chance that Spurs could go to rock bottom of the division heading into an extended international break, should Fulham manage to beat Manchester United on Sunday.

De Zerbi had his first full pre-season in N17 earlier this summer, in what was expected to help the Italian fully implement his style on the players after surviving relegation last campaign.

However, the players and team as a whole have only looked worse, and if anything, it looks like another season of fighting against relegation.

De Zerbi is now facing severe external pressure from supporters, as some suggestions at Tottenham would see a new head coach replace him in no time.

Spurs are not at the wrong end of the league by bad luck, because the stats prove they deserve to be where they are.

Tottenham are underperforming their xG by three goals, and despite this, their overall expected tally is still the third-worst in the league.

They get a measly 3.80 shots on target per match, with a low conversion rate of 2.8 per cent, which only Coventry City beat with 2.00 per cent.

De Zerbi's win rate at Tottenham is 29 per cent, and he averages 1.1 points per game.

The 47-year-old has only managed four wins and as many draws, with the other six games all being losses.

Ranting on X after Tottenham's 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, football journalist Henry Winter wrote: "Ridiculously premature inquests into De Zerbi’s management at Tottenham.

"He’s been in charge for only 14 games, rescued Spurs last season, came in, organised, galvanised and kept them up.

"Even discussion of regime change is crazy; managerial churn (eight in five years, incl. caretakers) would simply set them back, set the sad cycle to continue. He’s a good head coach."

The problem is that the longer Tottenham dwell on a decision to make a change, the more catch-up work will need to be done when a new man does inevitably replace him.

Spurs are on a downward spiral, and the underlying data proves that De Zerbi is hugely underperforming, especially given how heavily he was backed in the summer.

For all he did last season, the now is what is focused on, and he should be doing far better considering the £350million that was spent to help him this summer.

Players like Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush were all brought to N17 this summer, though the head coach has already started to publicly criticise a few of his players.

All the credit in the bank that he has will go out the window if he can't turn performances into results, as one win in all competitions so far is simply not good enough.

He was backed far less at clubs like Brighton, but even with the Seagulls he had a better points-per-game ratio with 1.5, and a 43 per cent win percentage.
