Why Alan Shearer still ripped into Dominic Solanke despite Tottenham heroics vs Man United
Alan Shearer was not impressed by Dominic Solanke's performance in Tottenham's 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Saturday.
The Lilywhites picked up their third draw of the Premier League campaign at Old Trafford, but their wait for a win goes on.
Roberto De Zerbi's side went 1-0 down late on after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock, which had Spurs expecting the worst.
Things only looked to be going from bad to worse after Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a red card for violent conduct after clashing with Luke Shaw minutes after the goal.
But Spurs kept plugging away, and Solanke's deft stoppage-time header put the N17 side back on level terms, helping them take a point back to north London.
Despite the striker's goal, Shearer has laid into the forward, though it seems he has been a little bit too harsh.
Dominic Solanke's 'desperation' called out by Alan Shearer
Solanke was given the armband and played the entire 90 minutes for Tottenham, managing to grab his first goal of the league campaign.
He had 31 touches in the game, as four of them came in Man United's box.
The number nine had a 79 per cent passing accuracy, but failed to win any of his three attempted aerial duels, also committing two fouls.
But Solanke had other chances in the game and registered an overall xG of 0.67, missing two big chances.
His chance in the third minute of the game had an xG of 0.15, one opportunity that Shearer hasn't let the striker off the hook for.
While speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, the former Newcastle United man said: "It's nowhere near good enough, only once in double figures when you consider the money they paid for him.
"Just watch how awkward and how little confidence he has here, because of his desperation to get it onto the right foot here. Naturally, you move the ball out three yards on your left foot and hit it, if he had the belief.
"The lack of movement here: a goalscorer gets himself into the middle of the goal; where's he going? When he says they need to be more clinical, he needs to be more clinical."
Shearer acknowledged Solanke kept on going to get the goal, but believes he is one of the main reasons for Tottenham's current underperformance.
While Solanke can do better, it's a little tone deaf from Shearer, considering what happened in added time.
Has Solanke saved Roberto De Zerbi's job?
The point for De Zerbi could be absolutely huge for his future at Tottenham.
A loss at Old Trafford could have been enough for fans to start turning, but the point completely changes the complexion of things.
Spurs now have time to rest ahead of a clash against struggling Coventry City, a match which, if they win, can change the momentum of everything.
Tottenham's main issue is undoubtedly putting the ball in the back of the net, as they have underperformed their xG by 3.60 so far.
While Solanke can do better, his goal was crucial, and he may only kick on from this point.
