How Lucas Bergvall fits right in at Tottenham after what he 'dared' to do in Sweden vs Romania

Lucas Bergvall backed up his point at Tottenham Hotspur after his performance for Sweden on Friday.

The midfielder has not been a sure starter for the Lilywhites so far this term, despite fans wanting him to be in the eleven from the off.

The 20-year-old has started just one game for Spurs in the Premier League so far this campaign, and was benched for 180 minutes in back-to-back games against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

But Bergvall's call-up for Sweden's camp over the international break gave him a chance to get some minutes in his legs.

The midfielder started in his country's UEFA Nations League match against Romania on Friday, helping his side to a 2-1 victory.

Swedish media has now reacted to Bergvall's performance, and it only proves that he should be starting for Tottenham.

Roberto De Zerbi seems keen on starting Rodrigo Bentancur over Bergvall next to Sandro Tonali, but Swedish media would be baffled as to why.

After Sweden's win, Fotbollskanalen wrote: "[Bergvall] won some duels and drove forward with the ball nicely in the field. Had a good finish, which gave [Viktor] Gyokeres a rebound to 2-1.

"Didn't really manage to close in the middle together with [Yasin] Ayari, as Romania often came through centrally in the first half."

Expressen gave him a 3/5 rating, explaining: "Nice interplay overall with Ayari in central midfield, who also laid the foundation for the 1-0 goal.

"At least they fit well together in a 4-4-2 formation. Otherwise, Bergvall – as usual – dared to break lines by driving the ball. [A] Heavy shot that led to the 2-0 goal."

In a different report from Expressen, the Swedish outlet explained how Bergvall "threw out his arms" after early dissatisfaction over the footballs not being properly inflated.

Bergvall earned a 7.4 FotMob rating for his performance against Romania, completing 95 per cent of his passes.

He won five ground duels, was fouled twice, and had a long-ball accuracy of 75 per cent.

Bergvall made four defensive contributions in total, while making 77 touches in a 90-minute display.

His three line-breaking passes into the final third are exactly what he can offer Tottenham to break down teams, something which is De Zerbi's Achilles' heel right now.

Tottenham stats that show Bergvall's presence is key

As mentioned by the Swedish media, Bergvall "dared" to move his side up the field.

The Lilywhites aren't known for the motto, 'to dare is to do', for no reason, but they need to have players in N17 who embody that phrase.

Bergvall is exactly that.

Spurs rank third for having the most possession in the Premier League with 60.6 per cent, but it's their lack of risk-taking that is not getting them points.

Sitting bottom of the division, Tottenham also have the third-worst amount of xG in the league with 5.00, which only backs up this point.

That said, Bergvall needs to be back in De Zerbi's side, sooner rather than later.
