James Wilson’s Tottenham spell so far: What have we learned?

James Wilson joined Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s on loan from Hearts in the winter.

Admittedly, fans aren’t overly keen on hearing anything positive right now, and given the situation unfolding in the first team, that is warranted.

But while it may not feel like it, there are several reasons to be optimistic, with one of the biggest ones being in regard to their youth setup.

Tottenham have several young players looking to make their mark in North London, including Wilson, who has already showcased some of his quality.

How has James Wilson fared at Tottenham?

Having played a fairly prominent role in the first team at Hearts, Wilson arrived in North London with high hopes, and so far, some of the signs have been good.

The recently turned 19-year-old has scored two goals in four appearances for Tottenham’s Under-21s, which is a welcome return for someone who has just made the move.

Ironically, his two goals arrived from the only two shots he has had on target so far this season, showcasing his clinical finishing ability.

However, while his finishing ability seems to be there, several other areas of his game certainly need to improve, most notably his physicality.

Wilson has won just 33.3 per cent of his duels in the four appearances he has made, with just four aerial duels won.

What’s next for Wilson at Tottenham?

Having joined initially on a loan deal, Wilson will need to showcase his worth in North London ahead of the final stage of the season.

Only then will a decision be made on his long-term future.

Spurs have the option to turn his loan into a permanent deal, but after four appearances, it remains to be seen whether they have been impressed enough to trigger that option.

Tottenham’s Under-21s have four games left of their campaign in Premier League 2, and the expectation is that Wilson will lead the line in all of them to get a better understanding of the quality he has to offer.
