Tottenham to agree Souza loan deal, Porto named as potential destination

Published on

Souza will leave Tottenham on loan for the upcoming campaign.

That is the view of Lilywhites expert John Wenham, who believes that Spurs will sanction a temporary exit for the Brazilian.

He was signed in January for a £13million fee, but he only played four times for the N17 side.

Roberto De Zerbi did not seem to fancy him, so Souza may seek a move away from Tottenham this summer.

Given the fact that he is just 20-year-old and has little experience at the elite level, a loan move would suit all parties.

Wenham has named two potential destinations for the young full-back.

Where could Souza be loaned to for the 2026-27 campaign?

Wenham could see Souza being loaned to either Portugal or the Championship.

The owner of the Lilywhite Rose account thinks that either outcome would benefit the Spurs defender.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: "Souza will go on loan. I think the signing of Andy Robertson, when you put him, Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence that can all cover the left- back position.

"I think he'll go to a Portuguese-speaking country so it makes sense that he'd go alone to maybe a Porto or Sporting CP, Benfica, somewhere in the Portuguese league as a Brazilian native.

"The alternative would be that if we just want to get him ready as soon as possible would be to loan him to the Championship and hopefully someone in the Championship would be willing to take him.

"If there's a club maybe with a Portuguese manager and or a lot of Portuguese or Brazilian-speaking players then that could also be a good move for him."

Which destination makes more sense for Tottenham development?

While a temporary switch to Portugal may be tempting, due to the language and a similar culture to his homeland, staying in England would be more beneficial.

He would learn the physicality required to succeed in the game over here, and increase his understanding of the language and how things work.

If he was loaned to a different country, he may well be more comfortable, but it would not help his development as much as heading to the second tier.

Wolves or Swansea would be ideal because their head coaches, Cesar Peixoto and Vitor Matos are Portuguese.
