Tottenham Hotspur are verging on a deal to bring Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke to N17, but Daniel Levy's latest claim may not land well with fans.

Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs rebuild is in full swing already. The signings of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers are two excellent pieces of business.

The ambition does not stop there, as Tottenham are willing to spend big this summer.

Van Hecke looks set to move to the Lilywhites in a deal worth £52million.

On paper, it is quite a high fee for a player with one year left on his contract, but he is a defender De Zerbi knows well and will undoubtedly strengthen the squad.

However, it is seemingly a transfer that former Spurs chairman Levy is quite critical of.

What has Daniel Levy said about Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham?

Levy is no longer involved with Tottenham, but he still has plenty left to say about the Lilywhites.

The businessman was a polarising figure among fans, with many feeling he undertook an underappreciated job, with plenty others in the opposite boat.

However, public perception among fans could now shift amid his latest stance over the arrival of van Hecke.

As Spurs near the confirmation of signing the Dutchman, a message from the former chairman over the deal has emerged via talkSPORT.

Jordan said: "I was showing him [Ben Foster] a fact about the Brighton deal and how Brighton have pulled Spurs' pants down on a player that is out of contract in a year and didn't want to sign a new contract and is the fifth most expensive soon to be non contracted player that has ever been signed, so that is what Daniel was pointing out to some extent."

While there will certainly be many who share the same fears over the price tag, hearing those comments as relayed by Jordan does sound quite ironic.

Why Levy misses the mark on Tottenham's business

Last summer, Spurs failed to wrap up deals for both Eberechi Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White.

In the case of Eze, it was due to Levy haggling over a price difference of around £8m.

The now-Arsenal man was available to sign due to a release clause worth £68m but Tottenham were looking to take him closer to £60m.

Due to Tottenham's perceived penny-pinching, their North London rivals were able to hijack the move.

An inability to get quality players over the line has ultimately cost Tottenham over the last few seasons, and the decisions by Levy directly led to Spurs' relegation fight.

The ambition already shown this summer far outweighs any previous transfer window that Levy oversaw.

The ruthlessness and definitive action shown by Tottenham already is what supporters have been crying out and are now finally getting.

With Levy's complaints over the fee, he is ultimately failing to read the room on this occasion.
