Micky van de Ven looks set to commit his future to Tottenham Hotspur.

There had been some small rumblings that the Netherlands defender could look for a new opportunity this summer.

But they never really materialised beyond whispers in the wind and Roberto De Zerbi will be counting on the 25-year-old as part of his Tottenham revolution.

The Italian has welcomed six new players this season, which has included the arrivals of centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.

Retaining Van de Ven for the prime years of his career also felt crucial, though, especially if Spurs want to re-establish themselves at the top of the Premier League.

A new update has now emerged over his future, and it is news that will be welcomed by all Tottenham fans.

What's the latest with Micky van de Ven's Tottenham future?

Talk on Van de Ven's future understandably went onto the backburner a little bit over the summer.

The 25-year-old was representing his country at the World Cup, and then went on a break before returning for pre-season.

However, noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Van de Ven has now reached a verbal agreement with Tottenham for a new contract.

Romano described it as a "long-term contract" that will include a salary rise for Van de Ven.

He said that the plan was always for key players like Van de Ven and Pedro Porro to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Van de Ven has at times faced criticism over the past two seasons, but you sense that the standards De Zerbi will demand will suit his game.

The former Wolfsburg defender could be absolutely crucial to how De Zerbi wants to play long term, due to his ability to play out of defence.

Last season in the Premier League, Van de Ven covered an average of 8.7km per 90 minutes, averaging 14 sprints, and a top speed of 36.2 km/h.

He also had a successful dribble rate of 73 per cent, which again shows his comfortableness on the ball and willingness to carry it forward.

De Zerbi likes high-intensity, high-octane football, but it all start with being brave in possession at the back, and Van de Ven certainly brings that.

He did make two errors leading to a shot, one error leading to a goal, and conceded a penalty last season.

But, frankly, you have to accept that is going to happen at times, and Van de Ven also averaged 3.5 recoveries because of his rapid speed.

The pay off under De Zerbi could be really exciting, and having Van de Ven tied down feels extremely important for Spurs.
