Dane Scarlett to leave Tottenham this summer after 'unfortunate' developments

Dane Scarlett will be allowed to leave Tottenham this summer.

That is the verdict of Spurs expert John Wenham, despite the 22-year-old scoring in Roberto De Zerbi's side's pre-season win over Auckland.

He spent the second half of last season on loan with Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, but could only manage one goal in 13 appearances.

He made his senior debut at age 16, under Jose Mourinho, and the famous manager heaped praise on him.

Despite a glowing verdict from the former N17 boss, it appears he is set for an exit.

Mourinho said that Scarlett "is going to be phenomenal" in an interview with The Times in 2021, when discussing England's future attackers.

However, Wenham believes that his time is up with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club after a series of poor loan spells.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Dane Scarlett, I think he has 10 months left on his contract, Spurs may have a one-year option but they haven’t disclosed that.

“He scored in the pre-season game, but unfortunately he does not score goals when he is out on loan.

“He had the loan at Hibernian last season, I think he scored one goal, which was a winner at Rangers, which is quite impressive. 

“He has never got into the knack of scoring goals out on loan, and as a striker that is what you are judged upon.

“I think for Dane, this summer will be his last pre-season with Tottenham, I think he will leave.” 

Where is Scarlett in Spurs' striking ranks?

Scarlett is stuck behind Dominic Solanke and Richarlison in the pecking order at the moment.

There seems to be little chance that his status will change, even if he thrives in pre-season.

He has scored a total of 12 goals in 114 appearances in senior football, and those figures just aren't good enough to be given a chance to lead Spurs' line.

An exit looks like the best outcome for all parties at this stage, as it would be too much of a gamble for De Zerbi to trust him.
