Cristian Romero could sign new Tottenham contract despite bombshell exit news
Cristian Romero could yet sign a new contract at Tottenham despite intense speculation about a move to Atletico Madrid.
Ange Postecoglou has a chance to guide Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League final with the Lilywhites holding a 3-1 lead heading into the second leg of their semi-final against Bodø/Glimt at the Aspmyra Stadion on Thursday (8 May).
Romero will be key to Spurs’ chances of reaching and winning the Europa League final in Bilbao.
However, whether or not the centre-back will remain in North London next season remains to be seen.

Tottenham winning Europa League could convince Romero to stay
Should Tottenham win the Europa League, that would see them qualify for the UEFA Champions League, much to the disappointment of Arsène Wenger.
And while speaking on The View From The Lane (5 May), the Athletic’s James Maw suggested that while Romero is unlikely to sign a new contract at this stage, Spurs qualifying for the Champions League could change the 27-year-old’s perspective.
Tottenham | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Cristian Romero | 122 | 7 | 2 |
This is despite a report on Tuesday (6 May) that the World Cup winner has already agreed terms on a five-year contract with Atletico [Sébastien Vidal].
Tottenham need to make a decision on Romero
By the end of this summer, Romero either needs to have signed a new contract with Tottenham or have been moved on.
The Argentinian will have two years left on his deal in North London at the end of the season. Therefore, if he isn’t going to put pen to paper on a new contract, Daniel Levy needs to cash in on the defender.
Atletico Madrid are in advanced negotiations with Tottenham for the transfer of Romero, with meetings to be held in the coming days [Uriel Iugt].
However, if qualifying for the Champions League could change Romero’s stance on extending his stay with Tottenham, the Lilywhites should wait until the end of the season to make any decisions.
