Randal Kolo Muani expectations diminish after what he did in Tottenham defeat vs Atletico Madrid

Randal Kolo Muani has been yet another failed signing by Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite there still being a second leg to play, Tottenham are all but out of the Champions League, having suffered a 5-2 defeat away to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Most of the focus is on Antonin Kinsky after his nightmare debut in the competition, but plenty of attention should be reserved for the performance of Kolo Muani.

Igor Tudor is under intense pressure to keep his job, and after the lack of impact made by Kolo Muani, any further inclusions in the starting 11 will almost certainly end the Croatian’s tenure in charge in North London.

What went wrong for Randal Kolo Muani vs Atletico Madrid?

Perhaps an easier question to answer would be what went right for him? Kolo Muani arrived with the expectations of being a game-changer, and he has done nothing of the sort.

As has been the case on one too many occasions this season, the Frenchman was completely anonymous throughout his time on the pitch, before being hooked by Tudor at half-time, and deservedly so.

Despite playing the full first half, Kolo Muani had just 14 touches of the ball, and while a lot of that can be placed down to the lack of control Spurs had in the game as a team, the lack of quality he offered with those touches speaks volumes.

As demonstrated via the Sofascore graphic below, Kolo Muani completed just one pass against Diego Simeone’s side, with a 33 per cent completion rate.

Both of his attempted dribbles resulted in him losing the ball, while the 27-year-old won just one of his four duels in the game.

He failed to offer quite literally anything in the final third, but having registered just one goal contribution in the Premier League this season, many have become accustomed to his lack of quality.

Igor Tudor faces biggest call yet at Tottenham

Tudor should not see another game as Tottenham manager, but if a sack hasn’t happened now, it’s highly unlikely to happen before the next fixture.

And for Spurs, that is an away trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

If Tudor wants to have any chance of getting a result, he simply has to drop both Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel, both of whom were dreadful on Tuesday night.

They may be two big-name players, but they are also players who are contributing to a side that is heading for relegation.

And unless those changes are made, that is exactly what will happen at the end of the campaign.
