Lucas Bergvall: Tottenham midfielder endures mixed bag in Sweden vs Norway

Lucas Bergvall was brought off at half-time in Sweden’s international friendly against Norway, as the Tottenham Hotspur star put in an incomplete performance.

The 20-year-old is in for a busy summer ahead, having been named to Graham Potter’s 26-man Sweden squad for the World Cup.

Playing 33 times for Tottenham in 2025-26, Bergvall missed a large chunk of last season with an ankle injury, as he’s yet to truly kick-start his Spurs career.

However, a strong World Cup showing and a healthy 2026-27 could see him enjoy a career year under Roberto De Zerbi, but he must win favour with the Italian first.

De Zerbi will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on all his players who are on international duty over the coming weeks, as he looks to refine his Tottenham squad and gameplan ahead of the new season.

How did Lucas Bergvall perform for Sweden vs Norway?

Bergvall has been tipped for a Tottenham move away this summer, with the possibility of a loan move being mooted by some.

Still only 20 and contracted with Spurs until the summer of 2031, time is certainly on the Lilywhites’ side over the midfielder, so that may not be a bad idea so long as he goes somewhere that is a good fit for him.

It remains to be seen just how highly De Zerbi regards him, and whether or not he envisions a significant first-team role for him in N17 next season and beyond.

Some strong performances for Sweden this summer could go a long way to helping his gaffer come to a decision in that regard, but that’s not what he delivered against Norway on Monday night.

Potter’s side travelled to Oslo for a Scandinavian derby, but were beaten by the Norwegians despite a late second-half improvement, running out 3-1 winners.

Bergvall started the game for the Swedes, but he was dragged off at half-time amongst seven subs made by Potter, having failed to really stamp his authority on the match.

As per FotMob, Bergvall was able to complete all 19 of his pass attempts accurately, whilst also completing one tackle, two interceptions and three recoveries respectively.

However, he also failed to create a single chance, took zero shots on goal, was dispossessed twice, dribbled past once, won just one of his four ground duels and was beaten in his lone aerial duel respectively.

Who are in Sweden’s World Cup group?

As aforementioned, Sweden are going to this summer’s World Cup in North America, and Bergvall is part of their squad.

The Swedes have been drawn in Group F, which also features Japan, the Netherlands and Tunisia respectively, in what looks like a pretty open group for those top two automatic progression spots.

Sweden and Bergvall’s first test comes in the early hours of Monday 15 June UK time against Tunisia at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.

They’ll then play the Netherlands at 6pm UK time on Saturday 20 June in Houston, Texas, before their final group game starts at midnight UK time on Friday 26 June against Japan at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
