Kevin Danso has bigger role to play in Tottenham relegation battle than Cristian Romero

Kevin Danso could be Tottenham Hotspur‘s unlikely saviour.

Going back to the summer, quite literally no one would have envisaged something saying that, but with eight games left of the campaign, it may well be true.

Danso has made 16 Premier League appearances for Spurs this season, with the majority of them having been throughout Cristian Romero’s absence.

Romero has been a liability this season, and given Tottenham’s battle against relegation, Danso looks to be more suited to the task ahead for several reasons.

Stats showcase Kevin Danso’s newfound importance at Tottenham

Danso himself has been a liability at times, but since returning to the starting lineup, he has showcased the quality he has in the defensive side of his game.

That is demonstrated by the fact that he averages 7.81 duel wins per game, which is the most of any Premier League defender, as well as 5.03 aerial duels, which is again the most in the division.

On top of that, the Austrian averages 9.42 clearances per game, which is crucial for a team in the predicament that is facing Tottenham this season, and again has him ranked among the top 2.2 per cent of defenders in the top flight.

In comparison, Romero, who has been linked with an exit from Tottenham, averages just 4.52 clearances per game, which places him among the bottom 23.1 per cent of Premier League defenders.

Those stats, matched with Romero’s horrendous disciplinary record, showcase that Danso is far more suited to play a hand in Spurs relegation battle.

Danso could be one of several unexpected saviours for Spurs

While Danso will sure up the defensive side at Tottenham, Richarlison has been the man that they have looked towards for the quality in the final third.

He, too, was linked with an exit from Spurs as they looked to rebuild their forward line, but the Brazilian leads the way for goals this season, having scored 10 across all competitions, including nine in the Premier League.

It’s perhaps ironic that it is the so-called lesser players who are putting up more of a fight for Tottenham this season, showcasing just how fragmented their mentality has been over the last 12 months.
