Tynan Thompson must be handed Tottenham opportunity after Xavi Simons blow

Tynan Thompson could be in line to make his senior debut for Tottenham Hotspur.

Roberto De Zerbi has already worked his magic to steer Spurs towards their first domestic win of the year, but it certainly came at a cost.

Having already lost Cristian Romero to a season-ending injury, their woes were amplified when Xavi Simons went down with a knee injury and was then stretchered off.

The Dutchman is set to miss the rest of the season for the North Londoners, which is a huge blow to their chances of survival.

However, Thompson’s performances for Tottenham’s Under-21s showcase why he could be the answer to Simons’ absence.

Tynan Thompson has what it takes for Tottenham

Thompson has three goals and four assists in the Premier League 2 this season, having started just nine of the 14 games he has played.

The teen has scored in each of his last two, showcasing his ability to be the difference-maker in games on a consistent basis.

He ranks among the top 6.6 per cent of wingers for his dribble success rate, which comes in at 73.2 per cent, with an average of three per game.

Thompson has demonstrated his willingness to drive forward with the ball, which is what Simons has done so often prior to his injury.

De Zerbi may be reluctant to throw him in at the deep end, but the lack of other options should at least afford him an opportunity.

Who is likely to replace Xavi Simons?

While Thompson may get a chance to prove his worth, it’s unlikely he would be handed a starting role this early.

That is almost certainly set to be left to Richarlison, who has featured wide left several times this season, despite being at his best centrally.

Mathys Tel remains another option for De Zerbi, who must find a way to maintain the attacking balance of his team without Simons.
