Arne Slot named as one of four Roberto De Zerbi replacements as Tottenham sack may be days away

Roberto De Zerbi may potentially be days away from the Tottenham Hotspur sack already.

The Italian was only appointed by the Lilywhites on 31 March, with the immediate aim of dodging Premier League relegation.

De Zerbi just about managed to achieve that, prior to a massive Spurs spending spree over the summer.

That huge outlay has not equated to positive results, though, as Spurs have so far drawn two and lost two in the league.

Of more concern will be the failure to score a single goal yet across that run.

And after Tottenham were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool on Tuesday, there is now immense pressure on De Zerbi.

What could force Tottenham chiefs into Roberto De Zerbi sack?

De Zerbi is on extremely high wages and his contract has a little under five years still to run on it.

Sacking the former Brighton manager will be a last resort from club chiefs.

However, an opinion piece in The Express suggests De Zerbi is in a battle to save his job if Spurs fail to score against fellow slow starters Aston Villa this coming weekend.

The article lists four potential names who could be in the frame to succeed De Zerbi if Spurs once again go down a different route.

Arne Slot, sacked by Liverpool at the end of May, is one of the names mentioned.

The Dutchman won the Premier League with Liverpool in his maiden campaign, but a massive drop-off last season saw him sacked.

Another out-of-work name mentioned is Julian Nagelsmann, who left as Germany head coach after a disappointing World Cup this summer.

Nagelsmann also has experience of winning a major title, having lifted the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, though his reputation has faded slightly.

Ex-England boss named as possible De Zerbi successor

Kieran McKenna is mentioned as the third name on the list, having stepped down as Ipswich Town boss after leading them back to the Premier League.

It is widely considered McKenna, hailed for his coaching ability, is holding out for a bigger job than Ipswich.

Finally, Gareth Southgate is a potential left-wing option for Tottenham.

Southgate enjoyed a successful eight-year spell as England manager, albeit without winning anything, and is known for his man-management skills.

Still, the 56-year-old would not be a universally popular appointment among Tottenham fans if that does happen.
