Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer share ‘deeper’ Tottenham issue in new sack verdict
Tottenham have a “deeper issue” than Ange Postecoglou, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have said.
The Australian is under severe pressure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following a run of just one win in 10 Premier League matches that has left his side in 15th place.
The 3-2 defeat at Everton on 19 January could prove to be the straw that broke the camel’s back with scrutiny increasing on the former Celtic man.
However, speaking on the Rest is Football podcast (20 January, 25:50), Lineker said: “I think both Conte and Mourinho have been quite damning about the way the football club is run, I mean they’ve got a great stadium, a wonderful training ground.
“They’ve been underperforming given the managers that they have had in recent times. You have to have a look beyond perhaps just ‘it’s always the coach’s fault’.
Shearer agreed with the former Spurs man, saying: “It has to be deeper than that.”
Is Postecoglou a victim of wider issues at Tottenham?
Postecoglou deserves criticism for his refusal to abandon his attacking tactical approach in an injury crisis where he is without four key starters in defence.
However, he is arguably a victim of the way the club is run as they have never backed him enough to truly implement his system.
The club spent approximately £120million in the summer but only one of those signings, Dominic Solanke, was an improvement on what they had in the first-team squad.

The rest of the summer additions were youngsters who should not be expected to make a significant impact on the senior side but have now been thrust into the limelight.
Even with a major injury crisis, the board has not given the Australian what he needs to succeed, the signing of Antonin Kinsky was a forward step but a lack of other additions in key areas threatens to derail their season.
The board needs to secure the former Celtic man the squad depth that he needs or make a decision on his future before the season becomes unsalvageable.
