Supercomputer predicts Newcastle vs Tottenham result in Carabao Cup showdown

Tottenham face a tough trip to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

It was a stunning return to form on Sunday, as Tottenham beat Everton 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Goals from Micky van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr completed a dominant victory, putting to bed concerns that had been levelled against Thomas Frank‘s side after they dropped points against Aston Villa and Monaco.

Kevin Danso was particularly impressive against Everton, the Austria international making a staggering 18 clearances on the night.

Richarlison is expected to return to the team against Newcastle, in what will be a difficult test against the current Carabao Cup holders.

Supercomputer gives Newcastle United edge vs Tottenham

Newcastle have faced an uncertain start to the season, after an extremely turbulent summer at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak left the Magpies on deadline day, after a saga that had dominated the headlines throughout the transfer window.

The Swede is yet to score a Premier League goal for Liverpool, however, while his replacement at Newcastle, Nick Woltemade, has scored four in just six appearances.

Eddie Howe’s side have struggled to share out the goals past the German, but are on a run of two successive victories after beating Benfica and Fulham.

Opta‘s supercomputer has given Newcastle a huge 53% chance of beating Tottenham on Wednesday, with a win for Frank’s side predicted as a 22% upset.

The supercomputer has allocated a 23% chance of the scores ending level, which will result in an immediate penalty shootout to determine the victor.

Newcastle are strong at home

Newcastle have lost twice at home in the Premier League this season, with Arsenal and Liverpool both benefitting from winning goals in the final seconds.

And in the Champions League, the Magpies were seen off by a Marcus Rashford brace at St James’ Park as Barcelona emerged 2-1 winners.

Nobody can argue with the atmosphere that the Newcastle faithful can create on a big occasion, however. Howe’s side beat Chelsea, Brentford and Arsenal at home on their way to the Carabao Cup final last season.

Tottenham must ensure that they keep their head above water for the early stages of the game, or they risk leaving themselves in for a very long night.
