Jeff Stelling takes swipe at Tottenham fans after what he noticed on TV – he may have a point
Tottenham began their Champions League campaign with 1-0 win against Villarreal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
A calamitous own goal from goalkeeper Luiz Junior in the fourth minute was enough for Spurs to claim victory in their opening match.
This was Tottenham’s first Champions League game since March 2023, with Thomas Frank looking to build more momentum following Spurs’ 3-0 win over West Ham on Saturday.
During the match, Jeff Stelling noticed something regarding the Tottenham fans.

Jeff Stelling makes dig at Tottenham fans during the Villarreal game
On X, Stelling posted his thoughts regarding the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
He said: “Is it just that tv effects mics are too low or is there a lack of atmosphere at Spurs?”
The atmosphere at the ground was indeed relatively quiet – because of the microphones or otherwise – despite the hosts taking the early lead through Luiz Junior’s own goal.
Frank’s first Champions League match could not have gone better, yet the Spurs fans were not in the buoyant mood that they should have been.
Franks has overseen a rebuild in the transfer window, with new signings Joao Palhinha and Mohamed Kudus amongst some of Spurs’ best players so far this season.
Barring a blip against Bournemouth, Frank’s side have been consistent throughout the campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain (neutral) | 2-2 (lost 4-3 on pens) |

Manchester City (away) | 0-2 Win |
Bournemouth (home) | 0-1 Loss |
West Ham (away) | 0-3 Win |
Villarreal (home) | 1-0 Win |
The win on Tuesday night was a scruffy one, yet a few players performed well for Spurs, including one new signing.

Mohammed Kudus impresses for Spurs once more
Kudus joined Spurs from West Ham for £55m and has adjusted well to life in North London.
Kudus was excellent against Burnley, providing two assists and registering six shots on his Premier League debut for the club.
Despite not registering a goal contribution since then, the Ghanaian winger has proved to be a handful for every opponent he has faced.
Touches | 59 |
Pass accuracy (percentage) | 86 |
Ground duels won (percentage) | 50 |
Expected assists (xA) | 0.38 |
With another assured performance against Villarreal, Spurs fans are starting to realise how much of a bargain that fee could prove to be.
