Why Tottenham loanee Jamie Donley is on track to receive repeat accolade after latest Luton scenes
Tottenham Hotspur's Jamie Donley is starting to flourish on loan with Luton Town.
The attacking midfielder joined the Hatters on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window, looking to continue his development.
The 21-year-old spent the first half of last campaign on loan with Stoke City, before his move was cut short as he was sent to Oxford United, who he was unable to help stay in the Championship.
Donley struggled with both Stoke and Oxford in the Championship, and moved back to League One, where he previously had major success with Leyton Orient in the 2024-25 season.
Roberto De Zerbi did give the forward a look-in during pre-season, but it always seemed likely that he would be given another chance to impress while out on loan in the EFL.
Donley is now starting to pick up pace with Luton, as their latest game against Barnsley proves why the Tottenham youngster is on course for a strong campaign.
Why Jamie Donley is on track to get honour with Luton Town
There has been lots of discussion about Tottenham's handling of their youngsters, particularly with the decision to sell Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough.
However, Spurs still remain hopeful that Donley can be an important player for them in the future, and the club was given lots of confidence after his spell with Leyton Orient.
The Northern Ireland international won the Player of the Season award with the O's after his stellar 2024-25 League One season.
His latest performance in Luton's 2-1 win over Barnsley on Tuesday proves he could win the same award this campaign with the Hatters.
Donley picked up a 7.9 FotMob rating after grabbing an assist in Luton's win at Kenilworth Road, where he also created the most chances in the match with a whopping five.
He has a 79 per cent passing accuracy, completing 75 per cent of his long balls and three crosses.
He won 100 per cent of his aerial duels, also winning four ground duels, chipping in with two tackles, a clearance and an interception.
Donley had 54 touches in the game, and his performance has now taken him to a combined five goals and assists after just seven starts in League One for the Hatters.
He is Luton's lead assister with three and sits top of their charts for chances created with 17, averaging 2.80 per 90 minutes.
Donley is no stranger to winning Player of the Season for an EFL League One side, and is surely on course to grab the accolade for the second time in his youthful career.
What has Roberto De Zerbi said to Donley?
Donley felt somewhat hard done by this summer, but has clearly put his head down and cracked on with things at Luton.
The attacker played several times in front of De Zerbi over pre-season, who may have given the Hotspur Way product false hope.
Donley said in September, as quoted by AOL: "When I came in for pre-season, I spoke to [De Zerbi] a little bit, and he said that he liked me, and I went out to Australia and played quite a lot.
"Then a few of the lads came back from the World Cup, and so then I was kind of pushed away a little bit. Towards the end of the window, I had a clear idea of what I was going to be doing.
"They don’t really give you a pathway. It’s about getting minutes. I’m still young, so it’s about doing well and going back next year and showing progress."
Donley has had a good start under Jack Wilshere at Luton, but simply needs to keep it up if he is going to be given any chance of playing for Spurs in the future.
