Why Samuel Barrott appointment hints at Tottenham vs Aston Villa goal fest

Roberto De Zerbi's side will look to snap a four-game winless run in all competitions when they welcome Unai Emery's men to N17.

Spurs are yet to claim their first Premier League win of the season, but likewise, as are Aston Villa.

In fact, Villa's goal in their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out marks the only combined league goal either side have scored so far.

As a result, you would be forgiven for predicting a rather uneventful affair between these two historic Premier League rivals on Saturday.

But the appointment of Samuel Barrott as referee could be a sign that it will be anything but that.

What is Tottenham's record with Samuel Barrott as referee?

Having only started refereeing in the Premier League in 2024, teams are still fairly new to Barrott and vice versa.

Beginning his refereeing career aged just 15, the Yorkshire-born official started refereeing in the EFL back in 2020.

A FIFA-listed referee since 2025, he's widely renowned as one of the top young officials in the game.

As detailed via Transfermarkt, he's been the man in the middle for six Tottenham games during his career so far.

Spurs have won three of those, losing twice and drawing the other, but it's the scorelines that are the most interesting part.

Indeed, in all but one of those matches there has been at least three goals scored, and Barrott was in charge of Spurs' 6-3 loss to Liverpool in 2024.

So it could be an unlikely case of goals galore on Saturday, but why else does Barrott's appointment bring a positive omen for Tottenham?

Barrott is developing a reputation as being a fairly lenient referee.

As per FotMob, his four yellow cards shown per game is the Premier League average over the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, his 19.5 fouls awarded per game are considerably below average for referees in the English top flight.

What Barrott is to Tottenham, however, is a referee who oversaw a crucial victory for them last season.

That's because the most recent Spurs game he had the whistle for was Tottenham's 2-1 win over Aston Villa on matchday 35 of last season.

Goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison that day proved to be invaluable in Spurs' bid to avoid relegation.

Barrott did show five yellow cards to Tottenham players that day though, and so De Zerbi will be hoping his side don't repeat that on Saturday.
