Tottenham Hotspur made a poor start to their Premier League campaign last weekend.

Spurs were soundly beaten 3-0 by Brentford, in a match where Igor Thiago also missed a penalty for the Bees.

Roberto De Zerbi's men were in better form as they brushed aside Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

New boy Savio made his debut off the bench in that game, and finished with a goal and an assist in a promising cameo.

But there are no illusions that they will need to perform significantly better against Newcastle than they did against the Bees.

After a huge summer rebuild, there was much anticipation about Spurs' season opener.

So, it was a huge disappointment when Keith Andrews' side claimed such an easy victory at the Gtech Community Stadium.

They will be looking for a statement performance on home turf against a Magpies side who drew 2-2 with Liverpool in their opening league contest of the campaign.

A bumper crowd will be in attendance for Saturday's contest, which kicks off at 5.30pm UK time.

What's Tottenham's recent record like against Newcastle?

Spurs' recent record against the Magpies does not make for particularly good reading.

Indeed, the Lilywhites have triumphed in just one of the past nine contests between the teams in all competitions - that coming in a 4-1 win in December 2023.

Spurs lost last season's corresponding fixture 2-1 in February, with Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey on target either side of Archie Gray's leveller.

De Zerbi will out for his side to arrest that poor recent record, and get his side up and running in the Premier League after the Brentford disappointment.
