Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to put together a far stronger 2026-27 season after confirming their Premier League survival.

Remarkably, it comes just twelve months after their Europa League triumph in Bilbao, with the Lilywhites having since slipped into a tense relegation scrap.

After short-lived spells under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, Spurs left it until the final day to secure their top-flight status with a second consecutive 17th-placed finish.

They ultimately did so under Roberto De Zerbi, who now has the chance to reshape the squad in his own image over the summer.

And with multiple transfer links already in the pipeline, Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney has been mentioned as a target, prompting mixed reactions from the Spurs fanbase.

Breaking through the academy at The Riverside Stadium, Hackney has continued to grow in importance throughout his professional career.

Now aged 23, the midfielder is seemingly ready for the Premier League step-up, having been named as the Championship Player of the Season in a year in which Boro fell to defeat in the playoff final.

In the middle of the park, Hackney is always looking to get on the turn and make things happen, with his best football coming with the game in front of him.

As per a report from Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo, Spurs are among a handful of clubs interested ahead of the summer, with an offer from Tottenham likely.

Reacting to the news, Spurs fans were mixed, with one supporter urging the Lilywhites to make the deal happen immediately.

Some, though, would remain sceptical, suggesting that the Championship is not where Tottenham should be shopping as they look for a Premier League rebuild.

On the flip side, others would suggest that Hackney is the man to move for, with the likes of Adam Wharton and Alex Scott developing into superb top-flight footballers after making the switch from Blackburn and Bristol City, respectively.

Naturally, Tottenham want to be competing at the very highest level, hence the mixed reactions to a player yet to do it outside of the Championship.

But, as mentioned by one supporter and coach, Harry Brooks, clubs could carry regrets if they are to miss out on Hackney this summer.

With the ongoing rebuild in mind, Hackney is not set to cost an arm and a leg, with the £25million winter asking price set to be lowered this summer, with a departure aiding Middlesbrough as they look to build a squad for Kim Hellberg and fight for promotion.

And for Spurs, it is an opportunity that they may regret not making the most of.

Tottenham seemingly striking a balance with summer recruitment

Thus far, Tottenham's transfer links seemingly point in the direction of a mixture between youth and experience.

Alongside interest in Hackney, the talk of a move for Savinho has reignited, after a long-standing interest last summer.

The Brazilian winger has not yet made a real name for himself at Manchester City, but is someone with sky-high potential who is just sitting there waiting to be unlocked.

Alongside this interest, reports suggest that Tottenham will be back in for Morgan Gibbs-White this summer - a player now a stalwart of the Premier League.

And with Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson set to make moves to North London, the idea of top-flight experience is most clearly ingrained into the minds of the hierarchy and De Zerbi.

Matching the youthful exuberance of Hackney and Savinho, the rebuild seems to be well thought out at the moment, with deals potentially done in the early stages of the summer, allowing De Zerbi access to a full squad at the start of pre-season.
