Tottenham fans watched on as Luka Vuskovic and Croatia were dumped out of the World Cup.

Zlatko Dalic's side faced Portugal in the round of 32 in the early hours of Wednesday night knowing a win would set up a clash with Spain.

In arguably the match of the tournament so far, the two sides played out a massively dramatic affair in Toronto that Portugal edged 2-1.

Ivan Perisic gave his side the lead, but it lasted just 13 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo netted a penalty.

Goncalo Ramos went on to win it in the 94th minute in the most dramatic fashion.

That left Vuskovic facing an early flight home as Spurs look on, likely to be happy with themselves.

What happened with Luka Vuskovic vs Portugal?

There has been so much expectation surrounding the 19-year-old after his loan spell at Hamburg.

He was arguably one of the best young defenders in the world over the season and looked set to prove himself on the world stage.

He started against England and picked up 66 minutes, but that was as good as it got for the 19-year-old.

Vuskovic didn't pick up a single appearance after that, continuing into the round of 32 clash with Portugal.

Croatia conceded 2.20 expected goals, 15 shots and gave up three big chances in a 2-1 defeat.

All while the Spurs talent watched from the bench as Roberto De Zerbi looks to have been vindicated.

Tottenham to have clear stance on Luka Vuskovic after World Cup debut vs England - Verdict

What did Roberto De Zerbi think about Vuskovic at Tottenham?

There was certainly an element of surprise when Roberto De Zerbi made the decision that the youngster wouldn't be a regular for him in N17.

Fans expected to see more of him in the upcoming campaign, but he now looks set to join Brighton instead.

That call may look silly from the outside, but if he isn't good enough for Croatia, is he good enough for Tottenham?

In his one and only World Cup appearance this summer he was hooked after 66 minutes after failing to win a tackle while losing 50 per cent of his ground duels.

Vuskovic wasn't much better with the ball at his feet as he maintained a zero per cent long ball success rate.

That is just a snapshot into his game, but doesn't exactly bode well moving into a potential debut campaign in the Premier League.

Tottenham and De Zerbi will likely feel vindicated in their decision as his exit now looks increasingly likely.
