The stats that justify Tottenham's new contract for Lucas Bergvall

Lucas Bergvall has put pen to paper on a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Sweden international has played a regular role in North London ever since coming in from Djurgarden in 2024.

He has had his fair share of ups and downs, which isn't a shock in a turbulent Spurs side.

That has resulted in questions about his future as exit links were rife over the summer.

It had looked as if a move could be on the cards, but he has ultimately stuck around in N17.

That has made way for Bergvall to put pen to paper on a new deal, but why?

Does Lucas Bergvall deserve a new Tottenham deal?

The Lilywhites took everyone by surprise on Friday by announcing fresh terms for the 20-year-old.

It remains unclear when his deal has been extended to with no mention of its expiry date within the club statement.

Regardless, the general feeling around this move has gone down well.

That is for good reason, even if he only managed 11 Premier League starts last campaign.

Bergvall still put up some positive stats with his 0.28 assists, 1.40 successful dribbles and 7.27 defensive actions per 90 throughout the season catching the eye.

The Swede had some top games throughout the past year, with an early showing against West Ham proving how good he can be.

A goal and assist capped off a performance also featuring five defensive actions, four duel wins and a 100 per cent dribble success.

That sort of level hasn't been reached enough recently by the midfielder and that is why his future has been up in the air after Roberto De Zerbi's arrival.

Bergvall has now sealed his future in North London and is clearly rated on Hotspur Way, but what does that mean for his teammates?

What does Bergvall's contract extension mean for Conor Gallagher?

Given that the 2006-born talent has shown his quality with the ball at his feet, pushing him further forward could be wise.

Faith has been shown in Conor Gallagher to play a more advanced role, but Bergvall could soon feature their regularly.

His dribbling is arguably the best part of his game while he also has the energy to get up and down.

The Swede average of 12.7km-per-game last season, ranking him in the top 10 per cent of all Premier League players.

Should he add goals and assists to his game, there is no reason why he can't be a true force for the Lilywhites.

With that in mind, it makes total sense to get his future tied down.

Gallagher may be looking over his shoulder with that in mind and may even see the January signing step up his form.

This level of competition could be exactly what De Zerbi needs to get his side pushing up the Premier League table.
