Roberto De Zerbi should take note as Ellis Lehane stars in Tottenham U21s win vs Man City

Ellis Lehane may be the latest name to keep an eye on at Tottenham.

Roberto De Zerbi’s first-team have had a nightmare start to the campaign, with no wins from their first give games.

That has not been the case for Wayne Burnett’s Under-21 side, as they sit top of the Premier League 2 table after four matches.

The young Spurs have three wins and one draw from their four matches so far, and Lehane has played a key part.

De Zerbi will have to find a solution to solve his team’s attacking woes in the international break.

Turning to the academy may be the right choice, and Lehane is a solid candidate to be called up to the senior ranks after his latest exploits.

The 19-year-old notched an assist for Miracle Adewole’s 41st minute strike that helped the Lilywhites secure victory. 

The underlying data suggests that he is very dangerous, as he created two chances for his teammates and took four touches in the opposition box.

According to data from Fotmob, the Grenadian ace boasted an 88 per cent pass accuracy and made two passes into the final third.

He also helped out defensively, making six recoveries, three tackles and one clearance.

There may be a case for him to be drafted in, given that Mikey Moore is on loan with Koln away from Hotspur Way.

What have Tottenham sources previously said about Lehane?

Sources within the club are already aware of the talent that they have at their disposal in Lehane.

Stuart Lewis, who left Spurs earlier this year, managed him at Under-18 level and also had interest in his progress when he was promoted to First Team Academy Transition Coach.

Speaking after he came off the bench to score against Chelsea in 2024, Lewis said: "It was brilliant and I think he that's the reaction we want from from Ellis.

"He's shown at this level that he can score goals, and I was really proud for him and pleased for him that he came on and got that goal."

Whether he can make the step up to the next level and contribute in the senior game remains to be seen, but De Zerbi may well be desperate for internal solutions very shortly.

It may be worth the risk, if he can make the step up to the first-team and show enough to justify the decision.
