Keith Hackett reacts to ‘illegal’ Rodrigo Bentancur incident in Tottenham draw vs Man United

Published on:

Rodrigo Bentancur has been slammed after Tottenham's 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The Uruguayan was sent off with Roberto De Zerbi's side losing 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

He was only on the pitch for 12 minutes after replacing Lucas Bergvall in the 66th minute of the contest because he head-butted Luke Shaw.

He let his team down and put them in a very hard position to come back from, especially after Bryan Mbuemo had given the hosts the lead.

Now, ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett has had his say on the flashpoint involving Bentancur.

What did Keith Hackett say about Rodrigo Bentancur controversy in Tottenham draw?

Hackett, who is a former chief of the PGMOL, believes that Stuart Attwell was right to send off the Spurs man for his violent action.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: "Referee Stuart Attwell and Video Assistant Referee Jarred Gillett handled this confrontation extremely well.

"The referee gave himself some thinking time and space before in consultation through the communication kit with VAR took the appropriate action.

"He correctly red carded Bentancur for the illegal use of his forehead on his opponent Luke Shaw.

"Bentancur was reacting after Shaw had reacted to Bentancur's reckless challenge on a Manchester United team mate by pushing him to the ground in a forcible manner.

"Shaw rightly receiving a yellow card."

How many games will Bentancur miss after Manchester United red card?

Bentancur will now miss the next three matches after being dismissed against the Red Devils for violent conduct.

He will be out for the clash with Coventry next Monday, the trip to Chelsea on 24 October and the home game against Crystal Palace on 31 October.

Perhaps, more importantly, he may have put his first-team spot in limbo in the foreseeable future when he does return from suspension.

De Zerbi gave him a rest after all the travelling that he has done in the international break, and he repaid him by losing his temper and putting the Lilywhites at a disadvantage.

He may have to earn the Italian boss' trust again before he is selected in the side

There are plenty of other options, such as Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Mateus Fernandes, who can be called upon instead.
