How Andy Robertson has proven he's up for Tottenham fight as 'guilt' admission made
Andy Robertson thinks Tottenham Hotspur are perhaps "still guilty" of holding the weight of last season on them.
The 32-year-old watched Spurs' battle with Premier League relegation from Anfield last term.
And so, upon joining the Lilywhites this summer, the veteran left-back will've been confident 2026-27 wouldn't be a similar story.
However, with no wins from the first five and sitting bottom of the table, fears are growing that this term will be another dance with danger.
Of course, there is still plenty of time for Roberto De Zerbi's side to turn things around.
That's exactly what Robertson is confident will happen, as he speaks honestly about Tottenham's situation.
At the time, the Reds were fresh off the back of finishing fourth in the Premier League, but had only managed eighth and sixth-placed finishes in the previous two terms.
Come the end of the 2019-20 season, however, Liverpool were crowned champions of England in a rapid ascension back to the top.
Speaking via The Overlap, Robertson feels Tottenham could do something similar in their own right.
"I look at Tottenham as if, probably just before I came into Liverpool, but like they're now starting this journey," he said.
"They've had a couple of really tough seasons in terms of finishing where they finished. They've now, to be fair, had a go in the market and went and spent a bit of money.
"But I do believe Tottenham are now starting a journey. Now, I don't know how far that journey can go. Nobody does."
Robertson also spoke about last season and how much it impacted Tottenham, and he made an interesting confession.
Why Robertson knows Tottenham's 2025-26 season 'hurt'
As with most teams that end up in a relegation battle, supporters often question how much the players and coaching team actually care.
Robertson, however, has ensured that this was never in doubt with Tottenham's class of 2025-26.
"Everyone (determination levels shown at Tottenham). You can see last season hurt them a lot," he continued.
"Maybe we're still guilty of carrying that weight of last season on our shoulders, and that's I suppose the message of the manager first and foremost.
"Also I suppose that kind of falls on me, the new players, like we need to forget. We need to now try and get Tottenham back to where we believe they belong."
Robertson's underlying numbers from this season show beyond any doubt that he's going to be key in helping Tottenham achieve this.
How does Robertson's numbers compare to Premier League rivals?
Robertson has appeared in all five of Tottenham's Premier League games so far, starting four of them.
Per FotMob, no left-back in the Premier League has created more big chances per 90 minutes than his 0.74 so far this season.
He also ranks in the top 7.1 percentile of his positional rivals for his 71.4 per cent duels won rate and 1.96 chances created per game.
His 49.3 successful passes per 90 put him in the top 10.7 per cent, whilst he's yet to be dispossessed once and has committed only one foul.
There were some who doubted Robertson's ability to continue being a top starting left-back in the Premier League, but at Spurs, he's silencing them rapidly.
