Ex-FIFA official reacts to moment that left Dominic Solanke fuming in Tottenham loss vs Aston Villa

Tottenham star Dominic Solanke was left raging after an incident in the 3-2 loss to Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old started the contest and got in several dangerous situations for Roberto De Zerbi's side.

It did not end up paying off as the managers decision to go with a recognised number nine did not result in a victory.

Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia notched the goals for the visitors, with Mohammed Kudus having a strike ruled out, before Conor Gallagher's deflected goal and Jan Paul van Hecke's header.

One particular situation left Solanke furious after the referee failed to intervene.

Ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett has now reacted exclusively to Tottenham News to the controversy that left the Lilywhites star fuming.

Solanke headed against Aaron Wan-Bissaka's arm in the 34th minute and desperately appealed for a spot kick from referee Sam Barrott.

Asked about the incident, Hackett said: "The close proximity of the header by the Spurs player to meant that his opponent had no opportunity to react.

"There was no deliberate movement of the hand towards the ball and, albeit it was extended, you have to judge that the arm was in a natural position.

"I support the referees call of no penalty kick."

Unfortunately, it appears that it was the right call despite Solanke's clear frustration.

How did Solanke perform vs Aston Villa?

Solanke had a very quiet game, with just 24 touches in the contest.

He recorded just two shots, one of which was blocked and also managed to create one chance, per FotMob data.

The forward managed just three touches in the opposition box, and made one pass into the final third.

He was replaced by James Maddison in the 65th minute, ending his afternoon very prematurely, in disappointing fashion.

Just after he was taken off, it got even worse for his side as Jackson, the Villans' number nine slotted home the second.

Spurs could have done with more from Solanke, and he needs to improve going forward if he is to stay in the side, and not be replaced in the starting line-up.

If he continues to put in those types of performances, he should worry about that, rather than refereeing decisions that were the right call.
