Djed Spence looks on the brink as Tottenham embrace future with Pedro Porro
Djed Spence could be the big loser of Tottenham Hotspur's and Pedro Porro's decision to ink a new five-year contract.
Announced over the weekend, Porro has now committed his long-term future to Tottenham.
The 26-year-old has been an excellent signing ever since he initially moved to N17 on loan in January 2023.
Spence was in and out of the starting XI under Roberto De Zerbi towards the end of last season, and looks to have work to do in convincing the Italian.
The pair are both currently on international duty for Spain and England at the World Cup, and will equally be hoping to go all the way in North America.
However, when they return to North London later this summer, it's Porro who now holds the far superior claim to Tottenham's right-back role moving forward.
Djed Spence could get lost in Tottenham left-back crowd
Porro being Tottenham's future at right-back was always to be expected, with Spence drifting more into a left-back in recent times.
Indeed, the Spaniard isn't really for budging down that side, and so the Englishman has had to evolve in order to survive with the Lilywhites.
But, unlike at right-back, there is a number of mouths to feed and players battling for minutes on the left side of defence, and that creates a big problem for Spence.
Destiny Udogie ended the 2025-26 season in impressive style, with De Zerbi potentially being the coach to finally unlock his long-touted potential.
Meanwhile, Ben Davies has signed a new one-year contract with the Lilywhites, and despite only making five appearances in all competitions last term, the veteran did perform well in his limited opportunities.
Then there's Souza, Tottenham's highly-rated Brazilian teenager who was clearly signed last winter with the vision of him eventually becoming Spurs' left-back of the future.
In short, Spence has an abundance of competition to contend with at the left-back position right now, and he's yet to really show the consistency levels to cement himself at the top of the food chain.
Spence could have another Tottenham card to play
Losing his role as Tottenham's starting left-back would have the potential to be fatal for Spence's future in North London.
All might not be lost for him in that scenario, however, as the highly versatile defender could have another trick up his sleeve.
Tottenham have flirted with the idea of playing Spence further up the pitch as more of a winger before, as he's got the speed, dribbling and crossing ability to play there.
Right now, Spurs aren't blessed with much depth at the left wing position, and that could open a door for him to carve out a full-time role here if necessary.
