Djed Spence enhances Tottenham starting chances after England win vs New Zealand
Djed Spence of Tottenham starred in England's 1-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday.
The Spurs right-back featured on the left side of defence for Thomas Tuchel's side in their World Cup warm-up friendly.
He has started just two of Roberto De Zerbi's seven games in charge of the Lilywhites so far.
He has surely enchanced his chances of a starting berth under the Italian with his latest Three Lions performance.
Spence was the best man on the pitch in the victory before he was taken off at half-time on 6 June, which will have impressed his club boss.
How did Tottenham star Djed Spence perform in England vs New Zealand?
Spence assisted the only goal of the contest, with former Tottenham fan favourite, Harry Kane, heading his cross home.
The Spurs man completed 87 per cent of his passes and made one big chance for teammates, per Fotmob.
The 25-year-old made five passes into the final third and took two touches in the opposition box, in a dangerous attacking display.
Defensively, he made on tackle and three recoveries, while winning two of the three ground duels that he contested, for a 67 per cent success rate.
It was a brilliant all-round showing from the five-cap international and can only help his case.
What more does Spence need to do?
If Spence can produce similar performances at the tournament in America, he may well have a chance of convincing De Zerbi that he should start.
Right now, he is behind Pedro Porro in the pecking order in N17, but things can change very quickly in football, and he could overtake him soon.
His versatility, the fact that he can also play left-back also helps his case, but Spurs have just signed Andy Robertson, so he is unlikely to overhaul the former Liverpool man.
He needs to hope that his showing has convinced Tuchel that he can either be the starting right-back or left-back and then De Zerbi will have more evidence that he can be his go-to guy.
Porro will likely be starting for spain at the tournament, so his rival for the position needs to also be on the pitch, rather than sitting on the bench for the majority of it.
