Dermot Gallagher reacts to new footage of Tottenham controversy - 'Never seen that before'

Dermot Gallagher has reviewed the handball goal that Tottenham Hotspur thought they had conceded in their 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The Lilywhites picked up their first point of the season in a goalless draw against Oliver Glasner's side at the City Ground on Saturday.

However, one big moment saw Neco Williams put the ball in Spurs' net, only for referee Craig Pawson to disallow the goal.

VAR consulted Pawson, requesting that the man in the middle take a look at the pitchside monitor before confirming the goal was breaking the rules.

Despite the referee being in agreement with the belief of Roberto De Zerbi and Co., some feel that Forest may have been hard done by with the decision.

However, experienced former referee Gallagher has had his say on the matter, and Tottenham fans will most certainly agree with him.

It's hard to argue against the fact that, had the goal gone in, more pressure would have mounted on De Zerbi.

It still wasn't three points, but a draw is something to build from, with Everton at home next up for the Lilywhites.

A tactical camera that Sky Sports had access to showed that Williams did indeed handle the ball, though this angle was not available to officials during the game.

On reflection of the incident, using the new footage that has emerged, former Premier League referee Gallagher shared his thoughts on the decision from Pawson.

He said, while speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday: "Absolutely [it's handball]. You can clearly see it strikes his arm."

The presenter explained the tactical view they had access to while reviewing the incident, to which Gallagher replied: "I've never seen that [angle] before".

He finished by saying: "Once [Pawson] has said it's hit his hand, it's disallowed, because it obviously went off Williams."

Gallagher was asked if the referee could have just made a guess with his call, as the angles that were used during the game did not offer full clarity on what part of his arm, or indeed which one, it hit.

But he was smart to protect his fellow referees and avoid directly answering the question.

But there are great lessons that Tottenham can take from this controversy.

Tottenham should never have been in a position where they could have conceded such a type of goal in the first place, but they were.

It came through a lack of strength while defending in the air, allowing Forest to latch on to a scrappy second ball in their six-yard area.

Tottenham gave away far too many goals from set-piece scenarios and other crossing situations last season, and need to break old habits.

Maybe this was the stroke of luck that they needed to get their priorities straight ahead of facing Everton next weekend.
