View: Harvey White struggles on loan at Derby, Tottenham loanee must improve
Harvey White is one of the more exciting young Englishmen in the youth ranks at Tottenham but the midfielder is having a tough time of it at Derby County.
White, 21, joined the Rams on loan in January but he’s since played just 10 times in League One, starting 50 per cent of those games and only played for 43 per cent of the minutes he’s been available for [transfermarkt].
And with White on the pitch, Derby have won just three games, which suggests the Tottenham loanee isn’t doing as well as everyone in North London knows he can.
According to stats by WhoScored, White has only completed 75.3 per cent of the passes he’s attempted in League One since moving to Pride Park in the January transfer window.
For a deep-lying midfielder who’s playing for a team that’s pushing for promotion and who also boast the third-highest possession rate in the whole of the third tier (54.8%).
Overall, the average pass completion for Derby is 72.5 per cent, which ranks them seventh in League One. Usually you’d expect a team with a higher rate of possession to rank higher for pass completion but therein lies the issue with Derby – they have the quantity but not the quality.
White’s stats fit in with that as he ranks joint-second in the Derby squad for passes attempted for every 90 minutes of game-time (49.9) out of players with 10 or more appearances.
But for pass accuracy, he’s seventh in the Rams’ squad.
White is contributing defensively, however.
His 1.8 tackles per game are the highest of all Derby midfielders and 0.9 interceptions per game is the joint-fifth best in the squad.
However, Derby have recently dropped out of the League One playoff spots as they aim to return to the Championship at the first time of asking following their financial meltdown.
As it stands, they’re level on points with Bolton in fifth and Peterborough in sixth because of an inferior goal difference.
Defensively, the Rams have it a lot more susses than they do going forward.
It’s time for White to up his contribution on the ball and earn himself the chance to be in Spurs’ senior squad next season or at the very least win a loan move to a Championship club.
