View: Another Tottenham academy blow on the cards as Romaine Mundle offered exit route by FC Utrecht
Romaine Mundle was set to leave Tottenham for Belgian club Standard Liege, however, an offer from Dutch side FC Utrecht has changed the young player’s plans, according to a report by Le Soir on 8 June.
On 4 May Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Mundle was set to leave Tottenham on a free transfer with Standard Liege and Anderlecht both interested. The sporting project and first-team guarantees were the winger’s priorities in any move.
And according to Le Soir’s report, everything was in order for Standard Liege to fend off the interest from rivals Anderlecht and complete the signing of Mundle; the club had even invited him to see the facilities and attend a match.
However, an offer from FC Utrecht has turned the 20-year-old’s head and disrupted Liege’s attempted move for Tottenham’s youth prospect.
Mundle is set to leave Tottenham on a free at the end of the season having declined to sign the contract reportedly presented to him, as per Lilywhite Rose.
This could potentially be another blow to Tottenham from an academy perspective, after losing Marcus Edwards and Noni Madueke in recent years with both players going on to flourish elsewhere. Mundle is another talented youngster who has scored seven goals and provided five assists in 24 Premier League Two appearances this year.
The player was called up to the first-team squad this season, featuring on the bench for five Premier League games, although he was not given any minutes in any of these matches.
And this could be part of the English forward’s thinking behind wanting to leave. Despite performing well at the academy level, his path to first-team minutes still appears difficult, and the promise of first-team football abroad might be too tempting to turn down.
