Tottenham Under-18 ace Maeson King can draw inspiration from ex-Spurs star Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham supporters will have fond memories of their former defender Jan Vertonghen.

It has been almost 12 years since Vertonghen walked through the doors at Hotspur Way.

Across his eight-year spell in North London the Belgian was part of some fantastic Spurs sides, particularly under Mauricio Pochettino as he helped Tottenham reach their first-ever Champions League final.

He made 313 appearances for the club and scored 14 goals while also providing seven assists, playing the majority of his football in the heart of defence.

Vertonghen was a fan favourite at the old White Hart Lane and during his brief spell playing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and many supporters will be keen to recreate a connection with another player at the club as they did with ‘Super Jan’.

One player coming through the ranks at Hotspur Way who could follow in the 36-year-old’s footsteps is defender Maeson King.

Maeson King could become a hit at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou

It was announced on Monday 26 February that King had signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website).

King has been with Spurs since the age of 10 and went full-time with the club as a scholar in July 2022.

Now 18, the versatile defender has been a key part of Stuart Lewis’ Under-18s side this season after featuring as part of Spurs’ Under-17 Premier League Cup-winning team during the previous campaign.

King has operated as both a central defender and left-back across his 14 starts in the Under-18 Premier League South this term, something which Vertonghen has done often throughout his illustrious career.

Postecoglou is an admirer of versatile players, with left-back Ben Davies stepping up on multiple occasions in central defence this season while Micky van de Ven was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

King will be keen to continue his development at Hotspur Way as he looks to put himself on Postecoglou’s radar in the coming years.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has an easy decision to make after a 50 per cent Spurs loanee suffered a shocker on Monday night.
