Tottenham U21 ace Will Lankshear continues to find the back of the net as Ange Postecoglou searches for goals

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou might have the answer for his side’s recent goalscoring troubles right under his nose.

For the first time in all competitions under Postecoglou, Spurs failed to find the back of the net in their 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday 26 January.

In fact, since Son Heung-min departed for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, the North London outfit have found the back of the net just three times in as many matches.

That is half the total of six goals they scored in the previous three before that. It is clear that Postecoglou is in need of some firepower, and there is currently plenty of that to go around among the club’s Under-21s.

It has been a wonderful season for Spurs’ youngsters who currently boast a 100 per cent record in Premier League 2, and their most recent victory saw them maintain a 100 per cent record in the Premier League Cup as well.

Once again, it was striker Will Lankshear who Wayne Burnett had to thank for his side’s 1-0 victory over Bristol City Under-21s on Tuesday 30 January.

It was the late, late show at the St Albans City’s Clarence Park for Tottenham, with Lankshear coming on with 15 minutes left to play and heading home the winner with just one minute remaining.

Three days on from a hattrick against Aston Villa Under-21s, it makes it four in his last two matches and 12 in all competitions for the 18-year-old this season.

Heading into their match against Bristol City, Spurs had won all four of their Premier League Cup Group Stage fixtures, and this most recent win saw them book their place in the knockout stages of the competition with a game to spare.

If it is not Jamie Donley, then it is Lankshear, and at a time when Postecoglou is desperate for some firepower up top, he could take a gamble on the academy prospect.

Lankshear is still yet to make one of the Australian’s matchday squads, but with Spurs currently in the middle of a run of three games in eight days, and short of options, he could find himself on a Premier League bench this week.

While he might not make an instant impact, Postecoglou has nothing to lose by throwing the forward in at the deep end.
