Tottenham: Rio Kyerematen can be an Ange solution as Destiny Udogie update emerges
Tottenham Under-21s star Rio Kyerematen has been knocking on Ange Postecoglou’s door this season, and the most recent update might have nudged him ever closer to his senior debut.
Despite naturally being a midfielder, the 18-year-old has recently been deputising at left-back for Spurs’ U21s side and has flourished in his new role.
He was first used by Wayne Burnett in the defensive position against Reading, coming on as a substitute for the final 13 minutes.
It was clearly a decision that paid off, as he started the 5-1 victory over Wolves at left-back, scoring and assisting from the left flank and cementing his spot in the starting XI.
While Postecoglou has a wealth of midfield options at his disposal right now, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all battling for spots, the full-back position has just opened up.
First-team sensation Destiny Udogie confirmed via Instagram on Saturday (20 April) that his season was over after sustaining an injury, posting an image of himself in a hospital bed.
The post was accompanied by the caption: “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
“An injury brings my season to an early end. It doesn’t take away from how grateful I am to every person that has supported me this year.”
This update will have come as a surprise to most Spurs fans and not a welcome one. either The Italian has been flying from left-back and will be a huge miss in Postecoglou’s team.
However, Kyerematen is one player who can benefit from the update, and find one positive in the injury blow.
Rio Kyerematen could make Tottenham debut after Destiny Udogie blow
Kyerematen will be thanking his lucky stars for his recent position change as it could make the difference between continuing his form at U21-level or in the senior set-up.
Ben Davies seems like the likeliest replacement at left-back, though his lack of pace and minutes on the pitch could see Postecoglou turn his head to the youth teams.
The youngster’s attacking capabilities could sell the idea to the first-team coach, especially with his style of play being mixed with the defensive abilities from centre-midfield.
