Tottenham fans should be delighted as star of future pens new deal

Tottenham Hotspur are building for an exciting future in the club’s youth academy, with teenage goalkeeper Carey Bloedorn signing his first professional deal in North London.

Spurs confirmed the contract news on their official website on Tuesday (14 May) in a move that will rightly have supporters buzzing.

In amongst plenty of positivity in Spurs’ youth ranks, Bloedorn is the latest to commit to the club on professional terms after a strong season as first-choice keeper for the Under-18 side.

The scholar-age squad finished fourth in the southern section of the U18 Premier League, and Bloedorn’s performances also saw him called into the North London derby squad in March for the U21 side.

The U21s finished top of the Premier League 2 table and are now in a play-off semi-final this weekend against Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, outlining a season to be proud of for the academy staff and players.

Spurs must secure their young talent long-term

Tottenham’s best performers have to be secured by the club if they want to be considered one of the country’s best, even with their U21 medals and U18 performances. Proof has to be in the future investment, which in securing Bloedorn’s future there are good signs.

Spurs have nurtured through numerous players into their first-team in recent years, with several currently out on loan. This season has seen youngsters Jamie Donley and Dane Scarlett feature in the Premier League.

Amid injuries to key first-team players, Ange Postecoglou could look to the U21s to bulk out his squad ahead of his side’s final two matches of the season.

Too often it has been the case that clubs’ academy sides may well perform, but there comes a bottleneck path into first-team football – Manchester City and Chelsea have been criticised for this, while some clubs regularly field young players recruited from overseas whilst their academy players of the same age find their development stunted.

Brandon Austin is an example of a Spurs stopper who came through the pathway but is now still considered a ‘prospect’ at 25 with little first-team opportunities – Bloedorn must ensure he settles where he can play football.

And on the basis of his performances so far for the age-grade sides, there is every chance he will be a star of the future in North London in the not-too-distant future.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou is said to be axing a trio of players as Manchester City come to town.
