View: Tottenham clearly have big plans for Dane Scarlett as new contract signed before loan exit

It is clear that Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou have big plans for 19-year-old Dane Scarlett, who has signed a new contract with the club as well as being sent out on a Championship loan.

There are few better ways for a young player to get himself accustomed to first-team football than to spend some time in the Championship. Harry Kane did plenty of that, and it worked out quite well for him.

And now Scarlett will try his hand in England’s second division, as the club officially announced via Twitter (31 August) that the striker has signed a new four-year deal at Tottenham and joined Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.

He was given something of an audition on Tuesday 29 August when Postecoglou surprisingly brought him on as a half-time substitute during the club’s Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Fulham. Although he was on the losing side, Scarlett certainly gave a good account of himself, as he worked hard, got stuck in and completed 100 per cent of his passes (Sofascore).

Clearly, Championship outfit Ipswich liked what they saw, and it will be interesting to see how the England Youth International fares in the division. He struggled to make an impact during his previous loan, scoring just four times while providing two assists across 40 appearances for League One side Portsmouth during the 2022/23 season.

Nonetheless, Scarlett is a player full of potential and has already made 11 competitive first-team appearances in the colours of Lillywhite, having risen through the ranks of the academy. He has also tasted success internationally, helping England lift the European Under-19 Championship in 2022.

He now has a chance to demonstrate to more people what he is capable of, and one person who will certainly be keeping a close eye on his progress is Postecoglou.

The Australian will hope to see Scarlett flourish while out on loan with a view to perhaps giving him a greater role in the first-team set-up upon his return to Hotspur Way next summer.

If he can live up to his potential, the future is certainly bright for Scarlett, and who knows, maybe Daniel Levy already has his Kane replacement on his hands without even realising it yet.
