Richarlison applauds as Tottenham announce exciting contract news
Richarlison was among the Tottenham players to react to news of a new contract being signed by highly rated gem Jun’ai Byfield.
Tottenham announced via their official website on Wednesday evening that the young defender has signed his first professional contract with the North London club.
Byfield turned 17 on Saturday and is therefore able to pen terms with the Lilywhites, wasting little time in doing so.
The news is hugely exciting for Tottenham, with Byfield described as “the best defender of his age in the country” by Spurs youth expert Lilywhite Rose.
And it’s not just supporters who are excited by the news, either.
Tottenham players react to Jun’ai Byfield contract news
Byfield is already on Thomas Frank’s radar, despite only turning 17 last weekend, and it may well be that he is fast-tracked to the senior team.
Indeed, Byfield is also catching the eye for England’s Under-17s and is set for, on his current trajectory, superstardom.
The teenager posted an image on his personal Instagram account signing the contract, along with the caption: “Happy to have signed my first professional contract for this club.”
Spurs forward Richarlison was quick to comment with a clapping hands emoji, while Dane Scarlett posted a red love heart.
Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Guglielmo Vicario were among those to ‘like’ the post, meanwhile.

Byfield is clearly a massively popular figure behind the scenes and it would not at all be surprising to see him regularly part of the dressing room with those aforementioned names before too long.
Why is Byfield so highly regarded at Tottenham?
It says it all that Byfield was part of Frank’s senior squad for pre-season and has been named among the substitutes six times this season.
That includes a place on the bench for Tottenham’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in August.
- Byfield captained Tottenham to U17s Premier League Cup success last season
- He also featured regularly for the U18s and is now playing for the U21s
- Been named on the bench six times for senior fixtures by Frank this season
While Byfield may not have featured yet, the fact he is being named in matchday squads shows he’s very much in Frank’s thoughts.
After captaining Tottenham’s Under-17s to Premier League Cup success last season, while also representing the U18s, he has since become a regular for the U21s.
As a reminder, he was 16 until a few days ago. Byfield is very much on his way to the top, and it’s great that this deal has now officially been signed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
