Ange Postecoglou cannot ignore Tottenham U21 ace Damola Ajayi after what he did on Thursday
Damola Ajayi has proven himself to be more worthy of minutes than the majority of first-team forwards at Tottenham after what happened on Thursday (2 May).
Ange Postecoglou is in desperate need of a shake-up at Tottenham right now.
The Australian watched his side fall to their third consecutive defeat at Stamford Bridge on Thursday as they were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea.
Spurs hardly laid a glove on their rivals in what was one of the club’s most lacklustre performances of the season.
Most of Spurs’ attacking players looked toothless against a much-rotated Chelsea backline which has been decimated by injuries.
And while the club’s first team were huffing and puffing at Stamford Bridge, the Under-21s were showing off their incredible character and mentality as they overturned a 3-0 deficit and defeated Nottingham Forest’s Under-21s 4-3 in the Premier League Cup semi-final.
It was the kind of result and performance which would have made Postecoglou take notice, with Ajayi, in particular, proving that he is worthy of an opportunity at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the coming weeks.
Damola Ajayi is ready for a first-team opportunity at Tottenham
Fresh off his hattrick for the Under-18s recently, Ajayi was on hand to make a huge impact for the Under-21s on Thursday evening.
With Wayne Burnett’s side 3-0 down at half-time, it looked a long way back at the Lamex Stadium.
But Ajayi’s impact off the bench was the difference as the 18-year-old helped Spurs to mount a remarkable comeback.
After Dante Cassanova and Will Lankshear had got the home side back into the game, Ajayi produced some stoppage-time heroics to send Spurs to the Premier League Cup final.
His “clever” ball in the 91st minute sailed over the Forest goalkeeper and all the way in, before, with nine seconds to play, his delivery into the box was knocked down for Yago Santiago to drill home (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 2 May).

It capped off a remarkable week for Ajayi on a personal level, and after the disappointing performance of Spurs’ attacking players at Stamford Bridge, Postecoglou would perhaps be wise to take a look within his academy for some inspiration between now and the end of the season.
