Tottenham Hotspur Women

In 1985, the late Sue Sharples and Kay Lovelock formed Tottenham Hotspur Women, originally called Broxbourne Ladies, after the East Herts College team folded.

Six years later, in the 1991/92 season, Broxbourne Ladies were granted permission to use the name ‘Tottenham Hotspur’. In addition, a reserve side was added to the senior side.

It would be wrong to mention Tottenham Hotspur Women without discussing the late Glen Weaver. After he was named Chairman in 2000, Weaver pushed the North London club forward by recruiting enthusiastic and passionate people who shared his vision.

Under Weaver’s chairmanship, Tottenham Hotspur Women received the Sport England Volunteer Investment Programme Award for the London area in 2002, and were awarded the FA Charter Standard Club in 2006, and the FA Charter Standard Female Club for the London FA in 2008.

Weaver was posthumously awarded the FA National Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Football in 2015 after his sudden passing in February of that year.

In 2019, Tottenham Hotspur Women were promoted to the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) after finishing second in the FA Women’s Championship, and have remained in the division ever since.

A new attendance record was set for the WSL at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November 2019 as 38,262 supporters turned out to watch the inaugural meeting between Tottenham Hotspur Women and Arsenal Women in the top flight of the women’s game, which was also the first ever North London derby played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
