Tottenham's Sandro Tonali transfer pursuit dead in the water, but their Plan B is miles better
Tottenham Hotspur are all guns blazing in the transfer market as they gear up for the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Spurs' recruitment team has already been in overdrive as they look for a substantial improve on their shambolic campaign last time out.
Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson and Bournemouth central defender Marcos Senesi are joining on a free transfer, while Jan Paul van Hecke in a reported £52million deal.
Tottenham have also been linked to a hugely ambitious move for Sandro Tonali, who had an 84 per cent pass success rate and provided two assists last season.
It has even been suggested that Tonali himself has agreed personal terms, and Spurs are aiming to negotiate with Newcastle United.
However, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United are also said to be in the race for the Italy ace, and there could now a change in direction for Tottenham.
Tottenham eye Adam Wharton transfer amid Sandro Tonali concern
The signing of Tonali would certainly be a huge signal of intent from a side that only narrowly escaped relegation last season.
However, there is reportedly concern among the Spurs hierarchy that concluding a transfer for the former AC Milan man could prove difficult.
It has now been reported by TeamTalk that Spurs are to make a "serious push" to sign Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton.
The news outlet reports that Spurs could look to sign as many as three midfielders this summer, but their pursuits of Tonali and Mateus Ferandes are being made difficult due to interest elsewhere.
With Spurs also now seemingly pushing to sign Wharton, who won the Conference League with Palace last season, it does hint that any deal for Tonali is now dead in the water.
How did Adam Wharton perform in the Premier League last season?
Wharton has also had long-running reported interest from Liverpool, so Spurs are unlikely to be the only interested suitor.
The former Blackburn Rovers man has become an established Premier League performer at Selhurst Park.
Last season, he made 34 top-flight appearances, scoring one goal, and providing five assists.
He also created 14 big chances, and made 1.3 key passes per game on average.
Wharton had a 79 per cent successful pass accuracy, while make 2.1 tackles, winning 0.8 possessions, and 4.9 ball recoveries per game.
